My strategy for curtailing student AI use

My strategy this year for curtailing college student AI use:
1) pen and paper midterms
2) emphasis on classroom discussion
3) in-class scaffolding for papers: write the thesis, outline, etc. by hand
4) short one-on-one meetings to discuss papers after submission

I’m not naive enough to think that these things totally prevent AI use. And it is hard if not impossible to do this in big classes (especially online). But I am pleased that it is resulting in students thinking and writing and discussing more than they would have otherwise.
